Escaping the Winter Cold

When I see that forecast on my phone, I just want to crawl back into bed. It hasn’t gone above the freezing point here in Zurich for the past 2 weeks. Snow flurries come and go, although the total accumulation has been only about 2 inches. When we go out, I wear about 5 layers of clothes, 2 pairs of socks, 2 scarves, a hat, and my hood is always up. Alex wears his handy dandy snowsuit, but usually needs a bit of coercing to get in it. The cold weather wouldn’t be quite as hard to manage if it weren’t for the harsh wind. Needless to say, we’ve been sick on and off these past few weeks. The trend seems to be that Alex picks something up at daycare, then kindly brings it home to me, and after we recover, we catch something else.

On a more positive note, on the days we’ve been feeling well, we’ve spent more time in places such as Starbie, which is an indoor play area for kids – complete with moon bounces, trampolines, ball pits, slides, bumper cars, and a bunch of other attractions. It costs 14 CHF per child, which at first seems like a high price, but for hours of fun, I’d say it’s worth it.

Here are a few of Alex’s favorite things to do at Starbie:

Shooting balls at a target

Running around on the moon bounce and occasionally jumping

Practicing driving skills

Ball pit

He was so busy, he couldn’t manage to look at the camera for a single picture. It’s nice to have fun places to go to even when it’s bitterly cold outside. Alex is hilarious to watch because he gets so excited the second we step foot in one of these indoor play places. He doesn’t know what he should try out first and then once he decides, he bolts toward it at the speed of light.

Wind really makes cold worse. Sorry you’re not catching breaks like we are. Glad you found something fun to do inside. That place looks terrific. Too bad kids are so adept at picking up illness from other kids. Hope you both get some immunity soon. Love to all.
